You're the sweetest slice!
Since the first official day of summer is around the corner on Friday, this is the perfect time to remind ourselves to stay hydrated! As the heat rises and the humidity consumes us, here is a quick tip and maybe something you didn’t already know to stay cool and healthy all summer long.
Thirst isn’t always a reliable sign that your body needs water. By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated. A simple way to check your hydration level that works for most everyone is by looking at the color of your urine. If it’s pale and clear, you’re likely well hydrated. If it’s dark yellow, it’s a sign you should drink more fluids.1 Many are not fans of plain water. If that’s you consider adding fresh herbs like mint or basil, cucumber or fruit, or a squeeze of lemon or lime.
Along with drinking enough hydrating liquids, try using food to stay hydrated! Many fruits, vegetables, and even some proteins have a high water content that can help keep you refreshed and nourished, especially during the hotter months. Here are some hydration-friendly foods2 to add to your plate:
High-Water Veggies:
Asparagus, baby carrots, broccoli, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, iceberg or romaine lettuce, peppers, spinach, and zucchini.
Hydrating Fruits:
Strawberries, watermelon, apples, green grapes, navel oranges, pears, peaches, and pineapple.
Dairy & Alternatives:
Skim milk, cottage cheese, plain nonfat Greek yogurt, and part-skim ricotta cheese.
Cooked Foods with Water Content:
Sweet potatoes, lentils (cooked), yellow corn (cooked), salmon (cooked), and shrimp (cooked).
Surprising Add-Ins:
Avocados and bananas may not seem watery, but they still contribute to your daily fluid intake!
